Honeychop Horse Feeds receive Conservation Grade accreditation
Honeychop Horse Feeds are delighted to have recently been awarded Conservation Grade accreditation.
Stephen Honeywood said: “We know that the way feed is grown is very important to today’s consumer. Customers can now be assured that by purchasing our products they are helping to maintain the British countryside and it's wildlife.”
The Conservation Grade standard is recognised by environmentally concerned organisations such as the RSPB and endorsed by leading conservationists including David Bellamy.
Conservation Grade farms have to devote 10% of their farmed land to wildlife – but not just woodland, ponds and other areas that can not be farmed. A wide variety of wildlife habitats have to be created and special crops that provide valuable food for birds in winter have to be planted.
Farms are also expected to create habitats for birds and insects and to erect bird and bat boxes. Hedges are cut only every third year to protect nesting habitats and food sources such as wild berries as well as providing essential shelter.
Honeychop employees had to undergo intensive training at an existing
Conservation Grade farm to understand how to get the best out of
the system for the company and for wildlife.
